In this issue of Seek we explore the local food movement. We examine four current local projects that highlight the unique ways in which food security is being approached in Halifax. These projects also reveal some of the challenges faced by existing and aspiring local urban agriculture initiatives, as well as opportunities to garner support for policy-makers to improve urban agriculture infrastructure, programming and resources in Halifax.
What is Urban Agriculture? Urban agriculture is a broad term used to describe a system of local food from production, processing and distribution, to consumption and disposal.

It is clear that the local food movement is gaining momentum across Canada. The recently launched Cities Alive Podcast episode “Agri-Culturing the City” profiles community change makers, municipal planners, academics and entrepreneurs who are demonstrating the potential for urban agriculture to stimulate economic and social innovation.
