What is Switch Open Street Sundays?

Switch is inspired by a number of “open-street” projects that are gaining traction around the world since the success of Ciclovía in Bogotá, Columbia. In 2013-14 the Planning & Design Centre (PDC) built on the momentum of the inaugural “opening of the street” in September 2012 advancing the Switch: Open Street Sundays (Switch) initiative closer toward the goal of creating a regular occurring open-streets initiative in HRM..

Switch Open Street Sundays in 2014

The PDC is well underway in its planning for the final Switch of 2014. Come out from 12:00pm – 4:00pm on Sunday, September 21st to explore the Agricola route! We  will release the schedule of activities and programming shortly.

Switch Open Street Sundays Toolkit

The PDC would like to share the success of Switch Open Street Sundays with other communities. To facilitate this we have created a tool kit, sharing our lessons learned and providing advice for creating an open streets initiative in your own community. Throughout the tool kit, testimonials are highlighted, demonstrating the substantial level of community support we have received here in Halifax and Dartmouth. The stories and findings reinforce that the Switch Open Street Sundays initiative is a powerful tool for engaging and empowering community in active transportation.
